INTERNATIONAL STYLE

JENNY HOLZER'S TRUISM - PROJECT I

Research:

For this project I chose International style as the movement which influence my design.
This style was started in Switzerland in 1950's and become famous in the world in the 70's.
The character of this style is built with strong typographic elements, using sanserif type word with right format and the unified structure. The overall impression is simple, clear, rational, harmonis, structured and serious. The designers from this era are Armin Hofmann whom refined the style in Base led school together with Emil Ruder, and Joseph Muller-Brockmann whom refined it in Zurich school. They all studied together with Ernest Kernell before World War II. Erick nitsche also one of the designer whom using this style for their design.
In my opinion, this style use a lot of negative space and more playing with grid or lines, size, symetrical block and make the words more stand out. It's also use contrast colour so it's clear which part is stronger and more stand out. This type is good for advertisement or logo because its clear, tidy and straight to the point.
